"i did this sculpt to honour one of skateboarding's most incredible individuals. it wasn't a commission or anything. i really did it for myself. but as i came close to finishing the sculpt, i thought ‘why not send it to john?' i'm really glad i did. it's the least i could do for a guy who gave so much inspiration to the skateboarding community. when he recieved the sculpture via the guys at dlx, he called me to thank me for it. when i realized who i was on the phone with i couldn't breathe. lol! i was so hyped! thanks, john!

i want to thank the guys out at dlx for helping me finish the sculpture. jim thiebaud and damon thorny, both sent me photos that helped me out tremendously. when the sculpt was finished, i sent it to dlx and they made sure john recieved it.

i love mark gonzales, so i'm gonna quote him again here speaking about cards in the transworld "sight unseen" film. “he's an original ripper; he's an original coors." i'd say that about sums it up. there are few people who epitomize the spirit of skateboarding like john cardiel. if you don't know that, then you need to go watch his videos. enough said!"

how corporations are changing skateboarding and why it matters.

lauren kolesinskas ©illustration: lauren kolesinskas

in the past decade there has been a huge increase in the level of corporate involvement in skateboarding, and we may be returning to a form of skateboarding that steve rocco, mike vallely, mark gonzales and others desperately tried to escape in the early 1990’s.

new members within the skate community, like eric wiseman, phil knight, herbert hainer, the maloofs, gary ream, william sweedler, neil cole, and andrew kline, are all challenging what it means to be a skateboarder and how we skateboard. these men (that have probably never stepped foot on a skateboard) run or are the money behind vf corp [vans], nike, adidas, maloof money cup, woodward, sequential brands [dvs], iconix [zoo york] and park lane sports Investment banking [street league]. through their economic capital, and power outside of skateboarding they have been able to force their way into powerful positions within skateboarding and are able to directly profit off of our activity. should we care if non-skaters are allowed to hold powerful positions in our culture? should we care if skaters associate with these people and buy their products? will it change how we skateboard, how we view ourselves and how we view the world?

bart simpson four down wallenberg set.

-----

also known as the wallenberg four, is a popular gap among the skateboard community which is located in a san francisco school. it measures 6 feet high and 18 feet long. the wallenberg gap first appeared in mark gonzales's part in "video days", a 1991 skateboarding video released by blind skateboards. more recently, thrasher skateboard magazine hosted "high noon at the big four" at the infamous spot. while the stair set is still there the school has re-profiled the "run up" to the set so it is no longer possible to use vega st to gain speed, it has to be obtained from a ramp or roll in.

too bad this issue of skatebook #3 got ceased and deceased, due to fox media infringement! fuck that shit!
