work in progress: the carharrt wip archives book!!!

photo: pinkviolence.

about this book.
-----
back in the eighties, when the western world was deluged by a wave of blue denim, carhartt’s brown duck work coats entered the streets as an antidote. detached from their original raison d’être of attiring hard-working men in mines and on railroad tracks, they arrived in our cities as some sort of new anti-denim. soon after, and largely due to the efforts of carhartt’s european distributor work in progress, the american workwear classic evolved into the international streetwear icon by which we know it today.

work in progress: the carharrt wip archives is the first comprehensive publication exploring that remarkable evolution. edited by michel lebugleand anna sinofzik, with texts by gary warnett, mark kessler and anna sinofzik, it features more than 350 images including heaps of hitherto unpublished photographs, artworks, as well as ephemera drawn from the company’s own archives and different private collections, providing an unparalleled look into the brand’s bustling universe.

featuring the extensive story of the brand from its humble beginning to their most popular garments like the detroit jacket, watch hat, siberian jacket, and cargo pants, work in progress is a celebratory, transatlantic stroll through the company’s rich and colorful history. this collection will appeal to both fashion enthusiasts and devotees of american cool.

about the author.
-----
gary warnett is a fashion and culture journalist, copywriter, and consultant based in london. mark kessler is a writer, translator, and copy editor based in freiburg. ian luna is an author and editor based in new york. michel lebugle is an editor and designer based in düsseldorf. anna sinofzik is a culture editor and writer based in berlin.

carhartt work in progress (carhartt wip) forms a division of the american brand carhartt, one of the first company’s to pioneer workwear in the usa. founded in europe in 1989, 100 years after hamilton carhartt established his business in detroit, michigan, carhartt wip has been carefully adapting and modifying carhartt’s core product characteristics for a different audience of consumers who value refined design and quality while remaining true to carhartt’s brand origins. since the beginning, carhartt wip have built a strong, organic relationship with unknown, inspiring, provocative and upcoming figures in music and sport, becoming an iconic and well respected brand in underground scenes, from hip- hop to skate, from graffiti to cycling, as well as working with labels such as a.p.c., neighborhood, patta, vans, junya watanabe and many more. starting with one store in london in 1997, carhartt wip have meanwhile opened flagship stores in more than 60 locations and can be found in over 2500 stores worldwide.

globe international ©
click on the image above to enlarge.
photo: pinkviolence.

purchased this big ass globe international book, as show in the image above, a day before new years eve last year (2016) at a local book store. well, i actually made them bring it in store for me, as it would have definitely cost hella lot more if i had mail ordered it myself and by the way, this book weighs a ton! i fukkin' kid you not!

“unemployable: 30 years of hardcore, skate and street”, consists of 705 pages from cover to cover! this muthafukka is jam packed & filled with more than 500 photographs and illustrations, with hardcover binding and weighs a little over 3 kilograms! no fukkin' lie, i tell ya! more like a couple of cinder blocks rather than a book.

i strained my right shoulder from the sheer weight of it gravitating down on the slings of the tote bag that i was carrying this book in, during my whole day out. what a fukkin' pain in the neck!

alright, alright... let's get on to business now. actually, i had already mentioned about this book before purchasing it in a few posts sometime back. so, go and read it, here, you lazy arses! well, that makes us even, since me own arse is too damn lazy to write a personal take and / or review for this ginormous beast!

anyways, fuck the world, go read as many books as you can, take photographs and while you're at it, don't forget to push your skateboards too, muthafukkaz!

unemployable: 30 years of hardcore, skate and street!!!

stephen, peter, and matt hill x globe International x unemployable ©

“clearly we were unemployable. to the outside that meant we were losers with juvenile hobbies and no future. to us, it meant not following a conventional life path. we wanted a grown-up life that would match our teen lives: optimistic, innovative, and fun.” ―globe cofounder matt hill.

from the 1970s underground melbourne skate scene to a company with a presence in over one hundred countries, unemployable is the story of how three australian brothers―stephen, peter, and matt hill―founded one of the world’s biggest skate, street, and surf companies, globe International. throughout several iterations, the company was the first australian skate shoe player; a creator and distributor of leading streetwear fashion labels such as stüssy, mossimo, obey and mooks; a producer of celebrated skate and surf movies; and from its earliest beginnings, a business that recognized the importance of connecting to the customer.

beyond the story of the hill brothers, the book features a large cast of players who ran globe’s debauched skate tours, infamous industry parties, exotic surf contests, frenzied stadium events, cutting-edge fashion parades, and red-carpet launches. in addition, it includes over 190 exclusive contributions from globe insiders and untold tales from the world’s most respected skaters and surfers including rodney mullen, tony hawk, cj and damien hobgood and many more. it also touches on globe’s affiliations beyond action sports.

a story about following your dreams, unemployable will resonate with a broad range of readers beyond a purely skate/surf/street audience.

obey: covert to overt book by shepard fairey!

got this book a couple of months back and never had the time to browse thru' it, but since now that i am done, here it is!

shepard fairey x obey giant x obey ©
click on the image above to enlarge.
photo: pinkviolence.

about this book.
-----
the seminal artist’s recent art and poster works, and his triumphant return to his street-art roots with murals, all in work never before published. shepard fairey rose out of the skateboarding scene, creating his “andre the giant has a posse” sticker campaign in the late ’80s, and has since achieved a mainstream recognition that most street artists never find. fairey’s “hope” poster, created during obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, is arguably the most iconic american image since uncle sam. fairey has become a pop-culture icon himself, though he has remained true to his street-art roots. obey: covert to overt showcases his most recent evolution from works on paper to grander art installations, cross-cultural artworks, and music / art collaborations. the book also includes his ubiquitous streetwear and chronicles his return to public artworks. his signature blend of politics, street culture, and art makes fairey unlike any other subculture / street artist working today.

this book showcases the significant amount of art he has created the last several years: street murals, mixed-media installations, art / music events, countless silk screens, and work from his extremely successful obey brand.

about the author.
-----
shepard fairey is an american contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene. he earned a bachelor of fine arts in illustration from rhode island school of design in 1992. he is best known for his barack obama “hope” poster, which he created in support of the 2008 presidential campaign. his work has been included in the collections of several museums, including the smithsonian institution in washington, d.c.; the los angeles county museum of art; the museum of modern art, new york; and the victoria and albert museum, london.

-----
the first book to celebrate one of the iconic brands of american streetwear.  an originator of west coast street and skate style, fuct was a cult los angeles brand that went on to become one of the most influential american streetwear labels, influencing not only the style but also the graphic and referential approach of countless artists and companies. driven by the provocative vision of its creator, the artist erik brunetti, fuct’s appeal drew on contemporary skate aesthetics and invoked a situationist slant on brand-oriented consumer culture. famous for their appropriation of iconic logos, and renowned for collaborations with artists, designers, and companies as diverse as david mann and shawn mortensen, fuct continues to flirt with controversy as it remains at the forefront of american street fashion and culture. published to coincide with the brand’s twentieth anniversary, with contributions from icons of the street fashion world such as aaron rose and gary warnett, this beautifully illustrated, comprehensive volume explores the archives of the brand’s products and advertising, as well as brunetti’s artwork, sketches, and films that continue to inspire and inform the brand.

no other magazine pushed the boundaries of skateboarding and pop culture like big brother, the raunchiest, rowdiest magazine to come out of the 1990s. constantly at the center of much-deserved controversy, the rag has been decried as pornography, bought and unexpectedly dropped by larry flynt of the hustler empire, and credited as the genesis of the jackass universe; it was also the champion of unknown skaters and featured some of today's biggest names in skate culture when they were just children. now author sean cliver puts a bow on the publication with the big brother book, a collection of covers and spreads from every issue of the notorious publication. featuring high-quality scans of the magazine itself no production or layout files remain in existence with just enough text to explain what's going on and choice quotes from each issue, this book makes it easy as well as fun to stoop to big brother's level.

the cinder cone!

this back to nature, alternative lifestyle and also a little skateboarding, short docu-film, is too good not to be shared. this really changed my perspectives on the idea of “alternative living space”. to sum this short, utopians living lifestyle and communing. that's just my personal humble opinion and take on what i've observed. please check this out and judge it for yourselves. also, share this video on the world wide web! thanks!

in the spring of 2014, a small group of close friends broke ground on a building project in skamania county, washington in the columbia river gorge. their primary endeavor was a multi-platform tree house but also included a skate bowl and a wood fired soaking tub as well. the crew came from all over the country and from a variety of backgrounds. some were professional carpenters, others learned on the job, gaining experience along the way. the cinder cone is foster huntington’s short film that documents this year-long process of building his dream home with this community of tight knit friends.

chirp; a collection of illustrations from the skateboard mag!

this is the last week of "chirping in" kickstarter project. please show your support by pledging! thanks! =)

my name is andy jenkins and i'm an artist in the skateboarding industry. as an illustrator, i'm mostly known for a cult-classic comic i wrote and drew in the early '90s called "wrench pilot" (under the moniker of mel bend) and the many skateboard graphics i've created since the mid 80's.

this particular project is a collection of the illustrations i've done for the skateboard mag over the last 7 years or so — most of them created for a particular column in the magazine called "chirping in" where the mag's readers answer particular questions related to skateboarding.

my kickstarter plan is to create a high-quality litho-printed publication which features the best of the 100 or so "chirping in" drawings. the project is a 7" x 7", perfect bound, full-color book. the page count is yet to be determined — i estimate it will be approximately 88 pages + the covers. the goal is to produce 500 copies of the book, 100 of which will be signed and numbered, hard-bound editions. i will also be offering stickers, pins and prints as rewards for pledging.

please follow the link to my flickr set that's devoted to a few of my chirp illustrations for examples, here!

hope you dig this project enough to contribute! i'd love to see these books get into your hands!

risks and challenges.

the challenge of this project is getting the layout to press and getting it printed by october this year. with the monetary support of you all, i can make this happen and send out the packages to all the supporters by november of 2014 — just in time for the holidays! i have good experience with the publishing business through "bend press" and so the process of making this happen is relatively easy and fun for me. meeting the deadline for publication will not be a problem at all.

agents provocateurs: 100 subversive skateboard graphics.

ironxhanger x sebastien carayol ©
click on the image above to enlarge.

skateboard graphics took a quantum leap in offensive potential after the sport was reborn aesthetically and otherwise in the 90s. artists such as marc mckee, todd francis, mike hill, michael sieben, ed templeton, sean cliver, moish brenman, fos, ben horton, alyasha owerka-moore, eli morgan gesner, jeremy fish, brice raysseguier, johnny mojo munnerlyn, alex kramer, todd bratrud, winston tseng and others brought dark humor and politically incorrect topics to the forefront of their illustrations. these artists intended not just to decorate and sell skateboards but also to raise serious issues and skewer values, deliberately evoking reactions from viewers. agents provocateurs asks new questions of this boundary-pushing artistic genre and its place over the years. did it save skateboarding? is it still possible to address such controversial topics twenty years later? what's left once all the envelopes have been pushed? these 100 boards and the artists behind them will form a clearer picture.

peace.

p.s. i gotta get this book too! =)

the art of...

todd bratrud.

ironxhanger x todd bratrud ©

"what makes todd so brilliant is his inability to create anything ugly. he tries, lord knows, he tries. he instinctively finds the beauty in anything he draws whether it be broken and beaten women, severed limbs, dead animals, conjoined twins or dead baby fetuses. it's a rare gift to make people think a four-titted cow / chicken is adorable."
- chris nieratko.

this book contains a selection of todd bratrud's personal favorite works from recent years for companies including: flip, the skateboard mag, nike, volcom, enjoi, teenage runaway, the high 5 and more.

the release of these two seen unknown titles marks the beginning of a new mbp series, edited by winston tseng, art director for enjoi skateboards. tseng has worked with some of today's most genre-defying visual artists and designers whose work extends well beyond skateboard culture. from sneaker and apparel design to product packaging, posters, high-profile ad campaigns and fine art galleries, the work of these artists is often recognizable, though their creators' names remain unknown - until now. with seen unknown, tseng unifies the diverse range of work by some of his favorite artists, putting it all in once place for readers to enjoy.

todd francis.

ironxhanger x todd francis ©
"i swear there were times we got so carried away with ourselves that we really thought we could bring down skateboarding with one terrible idea."
- julien stranger on todd francis.

after the artist monographs warning: the art of marc mckee and i hate: the art of todd bratrud, comes the third book in the series look away: the art of todd francis. look away examines the career of skateboard artist todd francis and his knack for provocation, pigeons, bums, eagles, vengeful nature and more.

while most people are familiar with his barrage of classic graphics for anti hero, real, stereo and element, todd francis reveals in this book a wider palette of styles and techniques. in 96 pages and over 200 reproductions of classic and never-before-seen decks, illustrations, paintings, sketches and even suicide-themed christmas decorations, look away strolls through a 20-plus year career built upon one motto: behind the gruesome, tell a deeper story. or, as francis sums it up: "it might be one step too far, but it's never the easy step too far."
