unemployable: 30 years of hardcore, skate and street!!!

stephen, peter, and matt hill x globe International x unemployable ©

“clearly we were unemployable. to the outside that meant we were losers with juvenile hobbies and no future. to us, it meant not following a conventional life path. we wanted a grown-up life that would match our teen lives: optimistic, innovative, and fun.” ―globe cofounder matt hill.

from the 1970s underground melbourne skate scene to a company with a presence in over one hundred countries, unemployable is the story of how three australian brothersstephen, peter, and matt hill―founded one of the world’s biggest skate, street, and surf companies, globe International. throughout several iterations, the company was the first australian skate shoe player; a creator and distributor of leading streetwear fashion labels such as stüssy, mossimo, obey and mooks; a producer of celebrated skate and surf movies; and from its earliest beginnings, a business that recognized the importance of connecting to the customer.

beyond the story of the hill brothers, the book features a large cast of players who ran globe’s debauched skate tours, infamous industry parties, exotic surf contests, frenzied stadium events, cutting-edge fashion parades, and red-carpet launches. in addition, it includes over 190 exclusive contributions from globe insiders and untold tales from the world’s most respected skaters and surfers including rodney mullentony hawk, cj and damien hobgood and many more. it also touches on globe’s affiliations beyond action sports.

a story about following your dreams, unemployable will resonate with a broad range of readers beyond a purely skate/surf/street audience.

how to build a mini ramp with billy rohan.

this was originally released in 2010 on vice magazine's site.

check out these step-by-step instructions on how to build a mini ramp with pro skater billy rohan.

if you've got a bunch of pro-skateboarder friends and you're splurging on a giant birthday party for yourself, it goes without saying that you're going to need a half-pipe. that's why billy rohan, a nyc skateboarder, came by vice's 15th anniversary party two days early bearing lumber, power tools, and an entourage of eager skater guys and girls. from there it was a hurried flurry of plywood shavings and bandsaw screechings as billy walked us step-by-step through the building of a mini ramp that can service a couple thousand partygoers. think of this little how-to number as the this old ramp edition of epicly later'd.

vans and metallica join forces!

got some pretty wicked news. two of the most legendary forces of all time will be collaborating with steve caballero to celebrate his signature half cab being the most popular skate shoe of all time.

this october, skate shops all over the world will receive their shipments of the vans x metallica 20th anniversary half cab pro. if you aren't sure which pair i'm referring to, half cabs are the vans with the heavy duty canvas that just seems to last longer, the mid tops that offer the perfect amount of give and support, the padded tongue that has just the right amount of cushioning and not to mention the classic waffle sole. no surprise that they're the most popular shoe at the park.

the metallica edition of the half cab will feature band lyrics embossed on the side as well as exclusive vans x metallica x caballero labelling and a unique clear rubber sole with album cover artwork showing through. find out where to find a pair of your own here.

the vans and metallica partnership will continue through spring 2013. a four piece clothing collection called "passion project" will be released in february, each piece is designed by a member of the band, as well as another two pairs of shoes saluting the bands debut album, kill 'em all, which will be out in march.

in the words of metallica "you know our fans are insane, we are gonna blow this place away".

20 years of half cab!

vans half cab ©click on the image above to enlarge.
image: vans shoes company

hand-picked by steve caballero, this fall, vans continues to mark this milestone in skateboard footwear history with a series of four distinctive half cab 20th anniversary artist collaboration projects, including one style uniquely designed by cab, himself.

-----

if one thing is abundantly clear from vans’ storied 45-year history, it is this: vans is at its very best when listening to the needs of skateboarders. originally released as a mid-top version of the classic vans caballero high-top, the half cab was created in direct response to the demands of a new generation of skateboarders changing the game and taking skateboarding back out into the streets after the vert-riding heyday of the 1980s. “in ’91, i noticed that a lot of street skaters were cutting my shoe halfway down and wearing them that way,” steve caballero remembers. “so in ’92, I gave vans the idea to make a lower cut shoe and call it the half cab.” vans listened and a new silhouette was introduced, an icon was born and countless other shoe companies would eventually go on to release their version of this original vans classic that has remained in vans’ line-up to this day.
