the cinder cone!

this back to nature, alternative lifestyle and also a little skateboarding, short docu-film, is too good not to be shared. this really changed my perspectives on the idea of alternative living space”. to sum this short, utopians living lifestyle and communing. that's just my personal humble opinion and take on what i've observed. please check this out and judge it for yourselves. also, share this video on the world wide web! thanks!

in the spring of 2014, a small group of close friends broke ground on a building project in skamania county, washington in the columbia river gorge. their primary endeavor was a multi-platform tree house but also included a skate bowl and a wood fired soaking tub as well. the crew came from all over the country and from a variety of backgrounds. some were professional carpenters, others learned on the job, gaining experience along the way. the cinder cone is foster huntington’s short film that documents this year-long process of building his dream home with this community of tight knit friends.

symirroretry (full length documentary film)!

before you watch this, check out the trailer, here! thanks!

five entities established in skateboarding share concepts of individuality, limitation, and knowledge learned from a constant evolving culture. a culture eternally cycling, dying and rebirthing. forced down dead end pathways by powerful business entities. manipulated of progression through decensitized internet labyrinths. two symmetrical beings, parallel in thought, know only that of which is seen. controlled by a vivid entity yet handicapped by a lack of capacity of free thought and expression. no ambition? no spirit and fulfillment? paintings of inner reflection. still, immovable and wondering; “what is my love and passion?” a documentary expressing the ‘artist’ journey of becoming. a parallel narrative supporting sentiment of fighting against conformity. a contribution of thought challenging comprehension and expansion. the story of symmetrical mirrors, formed as one entity.

a film by andrew lovgren.

cast: greg hunt, chris mulhern & chris fireoved, paul fisharto saari, pontus alv, sammy covert, grant puckett and austin cosler.

special thanks to jade & per lovgren, sammy covert, kickstarter pledgers, liquid 9stage port kc and jason cantu.

thank you all who contributed out of pure labor of love. this project could've never happened without your belief and support.

chirp; a collection of illustrations from the skateboard mag!

this is the last week of "chirping in" kickstarter projectplease show your support by pledging! thanks! =)

my name is andy jenkins and i'm an artist in the skateboarding industry. as an illustrator, i'm mostly known for a cult-classic comic i wrote and drew in the early '90s called "wrench pilot" (under the moniker of mel bend) and the many skateboard graphics i've created since the mid 80's.

this particular project is a collection of the illustrations i've done for the skateboard mag over the last 7 years or so — most of them created for a particular column in the magazine called "chirping in" where the mag's readers answer particular questions related to skateboarding.

my kickstarter plan is to create a high-quality litho-printed publication which features the best of the 100 or so "chirping in" drawings. the project is a 7" x 7", perfect bound, full-color book. the page count is yet to be determined — i estimate it will be approximately 88 pages + the covers. the goal is to produce 500 copies of the book, 100 of which will be signed and numbered, hard-bound editions. i will also be offering stickers, pins and prints as rewards for pledging.

please follow the link to my flickr set that's devoted to a few of my chirp illustrations for examples, here!

hope you dig this project enough to contribute! i'd love to see these books get into your hands!

risks and challenges.

the challenge of this project is getting the layout to press and getting it printed by october this year. with the monetary support of you all, i can make this happen and send out the packages to all the supporters by november of 2014 — just in time for the holidays! i have good experience with the publishing business through "bend press" and so the process of making this happen is relatively easy and fun for me. meeting the deadline for publication will not be a problem at all.

book review: hello, skater girl.

i backed my friend julian bleecker's book hello, skater girl on kickstarter and just received my copy.

julian spent well over a year photographing skateboarding girls in venice beach and it shows in his photos. he not only captures some great action shots, but shots of the girls eating, laughing, etc, and as a result you get a nice little snapshot of a particular sub-culture community.

here's a nice video he did that captures the spirit of making the book, and gives you a feel for the book itself.

it's a really pretty book that makes a nice addition to a collection of photo books, if you are into such things. i'm also looking forward to my daughter consuming it some day, not in hopes that she'll become a skater, but rather that she'll see that girls can do whatever they want - even things that some think are just for boys.

my only complaint is that I'd have loved for some of the back story (much of which is on julian's blog) about the shoots to have made it into the book. now, that would have changed the nature of the book itself, which is purely a photo book, so i'll forgive him for not including it, and now you've got an excuse to pour through his blog too. (as an example of what i mean, read this page, about climbing "seal-team-6" style into the back yard of a condemned 70's house, and it makes the photos of skating the pool that much sweeter.
