this is also one of the few reasons that i personally dislike “methods”, “style” and “technicality” aspects on how to push a fukkin' skateboard “properly”. so distasteful and seriously, who really gives a fukk?!!!

no, i am neither mad nor angry, i am just sayin'... so, you go ahead and do your thang, and i'll do mine, aight? thats' it, end of story.

got this book a couple of months back and never had the time to browse thru' it, but since now that i am done, here it is!

the seminal artist’s recent art and poster works, and his triumphant return to his street-art roots with murals, all in work never before published. shepard fairey rose out of the skateboarding scene, creating his “andre the giant has a posse” sticker campaign in the late ’80s, and has since achieved a mainstream recognition that most street artists never find. fairey’s “hope” poster, created during obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, is arguably the most iconic american image since uncle sam. fairey has become a pop-culture icon himself, though he has remained true to his street-art roots. obey: covert to overt showcases his most recent evolution from works on paper to grander art installations, cross-cultural artworks, and music / art collaborations. the book also includes his ubiquitous streetwear and chronicles his return to public artworks. his signature blend of politics, street culture, and art makes fairey unlike any other subculture / street artist working today. 

this book showcases the significant amount of art he has created the last several years: street murals, mixed-media installations, art / music events, countless silk screens, and work from his extremely successful obey brand.

toronto demolishes diy skatepark...

despite yet having enough signatures before its date of due, toronto officials went ahead and tore the diy skatepark down. wtf?!!!

don't be despaired. fight on the good fight and never surrender! they can tear it all down, but we can always build bigger, mightier and better ones! 

toronto skateboarders have turned a derelict dead end corner into a thriving community diy skatepark. local businesses who support the initiative have informed the builders that city has plans to demolish the structure.

permanent diy skateparks have become essential community fixtures in montreal, vancouver, new york, philadelphia, seattle and various other cities. they are international cultural hubs and toronto is missing out.

the park has spawned a community skateboarders who are dedicated to taking care of the space and integrating into the community.

our fall 2016 campaign shoot took place in puerto peñasco, mexico. in this 3-minute documentary, we follow a small, but energized community of skateboarders and help them build a new skate park.

the levi's® skateboarding crew broke ground at puerto peñasco's newest park, cutting the ribbon with the city’s mayor in march, 2016. they found the time to also build several new diy obstacles at the existing park and also hit the streets, encountering a handful of rad spots with the local skaters.

peace park is a documentary about a turf war ragging in a small park in the heart of montreal’s downtown core. fighting for the public space is a community of lifers that consists of drug dealers, crack addicts, alcoholics, prostitutes, and the homeless. there is also a community of skaters who use this spot because it’s perfect for skateboarding. the two communities battle daily over the space, but there exists a larger conflict with the city and broader elements of society who see both groups as “undesirable”.

local skateboarder david bouthillier has chronicled these conflicts for the past 12 years as the city and police embarked on measures bordering on the absurd in an attempt to rid the park of these communities and clean up the area’s image.

the documentary explores the historical importance of the neighborhood and how a series of attempts by the city to clean up the area has contributed to the current situation in the park. it looks at the present political conflicts between corporate greed and grassroots artists, and how different forms of underground culture, particularly skateboarding and graffiti, have made their mark on the public space.

a theme of tolerance is weaved throughout the story, told through interviews and personal accounts matched with raw, violent and highly disturbing footage that reveals a unique glimpse into the reality of the street life for many metropolitans.

a human perspective is maintained by showing individuals with problems that need addressing instead of a single problem while highlighting broader social and urban problems.

san antonio de los baños: a visual vignette!

the video is a 3 minute mood piece mostly shot in a small town called san antonio de los baños, cuba - where the second biggest skate scene on the island resides. on every trip to cuba, we visit this small town to deliver skate gear and support the town's emerging skate community. we bring havana skaters on these trips, and it's a great way to build and grow the island's skateboarding family. shot in july of 2013.

veedro films follows a crew of talented and restless skaters from havana, 23yg, as they team up with american skateboarder miles jackson to build a state-of-the art skate park and vie for a chance to host their country’s first-ever international skate competition. the crew faces challenges. their current skatepark is decrepit and needs repairs before they can host a first-class skate competition, sponsors are hesitant to work around a harsh american embargo, and there are many bureaucratic hurdles in the way before the cuban government approves construction permits.

but over the 9 months it takes to build the park, jackson and 23yg will prove that they can overcome cultural prejudice, bridge the gap between cuban and american bureaucracies, and host a skate competition, opening cuba to a global cultural movement.

i have not been updated on this particular magazine for the longest time. founded in '95 by thomas marecki in germany, lodown magazine, has been one of the top art, photography and board culture magazines in me books.

i got these two fukkin' solid issues ov lowdown magazine #99 december 2015/march 2016 and #100 august 1995 - april 2016 above here, yesterday at a local bookstore and they're prolly their last two issues, if i am not mistaken. so, hells yeah and lucky me, yo! \m/

the cinder cone!

this back to nature, alternative lifestyle and also a little skateboarding, short docu-film, is too good not to be shared. this really changed my perspectives on the idea of “alternative living space”. to sum this short, utopians living lifestyle and communing. that's just my personal humble opinion and take on what i've observed. please check this out and judge it for yourselves. also, share this video on the world wide web! thanks! 

in the spring of 2014, a small group of close friends broke ground on a building project in skamania county, washington in the columbia river gorge. their primary endeavor was a multi-platform tree house but also included a skate bowl and a wood fired soaking tub as well. the crew came from all over the country and from a variety of backgrounds. some were professional carpenters, others learned on the job, gaining experience along the way. the cinder cone is foster huntington’s short film that documents this year-long process of building his dream home with this community of tight knit friends.

what’s in store for the future of burnside?

if you’ve been down to burnside in the past few months, then you’ve seen it first hand: times are changing. parking lot lurkers have been replaced by a huge cement wall—the exterior of a mixed-use high rise going up within feet of the burnside bridge. intense gentrification of the produce row area isn’t burnside’s only problem, though. multnomah county has launched a 20-year plan to retrofit the city’s aging bridges and burnside bridge is on top of that list!

on halloween 2015, burnside skatepark turns a quarter century old. will the park and / or the spirit of burnside survive another 25 years?

this year's eric stricker memorial award goes to...

skateistan & oliver percovich!

this year’s eric stricker memorial award deservedly goes to the incredible people at skateistan, who have spent the past eight years using skateboarding as a tool of empowerment for youths in afghanistan, south africa and cambodia. founded by oliver percovich in 2007 and with their first facility opened in ’09 in kabul, the non-profit, non-governmental organization works with children from a range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds in some of the most war-torn and impoverished countries on the planet to build trust, offer educational opportunities and bring hope to youths whose lives and living conditions might otherwise seem exceedingly difficult from our perspective of first-world comforts.

first it was the espn x games then street league and now the olympics? com’on, tony! this is not funny at all...! skateboarding should remain in da streets and not in some fancy stadium!

could skateboarding become an olympic sport? following the success of snowboarding and freestyle skiing at the sochi winter olympics in january, the organisers are apparently considering it seriously.

tony hawk has been invited to several meetings about it and recently told larry king he believes it will be part of the games by 2020.

skateboarding in palestine - التزلج في فلسطين

"(i am submitting this video on behalf of mick kirkman who is out of the country with little to no internet!) my name is charlie davis and i set up the organisation skatepal in 2012 after seeing the potential for skateboarding in palestine whilst i was volunteering there as a teacher. mick kirkman volunteered to come out with me this spring (2014) to help out and to make a short film about the project. skatepal is a registered charity and promotes skateboarding in palestine through building skateramps / parks and holding classes. since 2012, we have been growing and developing the skateboard scene in the country. we are set to head out again in a few weeks, with a diverse team of 20 volunteers, to build 3 new skateparks in palestine responding to the enthusiasm we received on our previous trips. it is very exciting to be present at the outset of the growing interest in skateboarding in the west bank and to work with highly motivated children who have a love of the skating. we focus on areas where the children are most disadvantaged due to life under military occupation and we strive to offer young people a creative outlet to express themselves creatively and positively through skateboarding. a lack of sporting opportunities in the areas in which we work means that this project is very important for these young people, for whom there is not a lot to do. they often get caught up in the conflict and so we want to give them the opportunity to channel their energies through skateboarding. we were lucky to have mick come out with us and shoot this excellent short film to help promote our project capturing the feeling and atmosphere of the west bank."

things are changing in afghanistan. help skateistan continue to empower afghan youth like madina and keep skateistan rolling! this july we're aiming to raise 20,000usd and we need your help, here!

16-year-old madina is one of afghanistan's most talented skaters. starting out in skateistan's creative arts and skateboarding program, madina began as a student but has quickly become an excellent female role model and an inspiring teacher.

only 13% of afghan women can read and over 70,000 afghan children work in the streets daily to support their families.

since joining skateistan, madina has gone from ordinary afghan girl to a tedx speaker. in 2014 she represented afghanistan at un habitat's world urban forum in 2014 - her first time leaving her country.

help us keep skateistan rolling and continue to offer leadership opportunities to the youth of afghanistan, cambodia and south africa through skateboarding.

one of cuba’s most creative skaters and surfers, yojani pérez rivera reflects on how he and his amigos are #livingoffthewall to make the most of the little they have. mamerto, as he’s known around the island, is among the most active local skaters advancing cuba skate's mission.

cuba skate, an ngo created by american skater miles jackson, is in the process of creating a documentary feature following the lives of mamerto and his scrappy crew, 23yg, to rally the international skate community around its goals:

1. provide much needed skate materials to the cuban youth

2. renovate the only, dilapidated skatepark in havana

3. establish the first skate shop in cuba and foster a bilateral educational exchange between cuban and american skaters

winning vans’ #livingoffthewall contest would help us make the cuba skate documentary a reality and share mamerto and 23yg’s story with the world.
