behind the scenes of the vans x star wars video.

in a galaxy not that far from vans headquarters, directors christian jacobs and jason devilliers work with costume masterminds scott johnson and cleve gunderman to create a fun mash up of the star wars and vans universes. we give you an inside look at the making of the wookiee costume that legendary skateboarder steve caballero wears as he shreds through a late 70's inspired skateboard contest.

may the fourth be with you!

to introduce the special edition vans x star wars collection (shoes and apparel) launching june 2014, vans took a look back at a pivotal moment in history. they turn the clocks back to huntington beach, ca, 1980, where christian hosoi goes head to head with the rookie wookie (aka steve caballero). in attendance were stormtroopers, jawas, chewbacca and a long list of vans glitterati.

got some pretty wicked news. two of the most legendary forces of all time will be collaborating with steve caballero to celebrate his signature half cab being the most popular skate shoe of all time.

this october, skate shops all over the world will receive their shipments of the vans x metallica 20th anniversary half cab pro. if you aren't sure which pair i'm referring to, half cabs are the vans with the heavy duty canvas that just seems to last longer, the mid tops that offer the perfect amount of give and support, the padded tongue that has just the right amount of cushioning and not to mention the classic waffle sole. no surprise that they're the most popular shoe at the park.

the metallica edition of the half cab will feature band lyrics embossed on the side as well as exclusive vans x metallica x caballero labelling and a unique clear rubber sole with album cover artwork showing through. find out where to find a pair of your own here.

the vans and metallica partnership will continue through spring 2013. a four piece clothing collection called "passion project" will be released in february, each piece is designed by a member of the band, as well as another two pairs of shoes saluting the bands debut album, kill 'em all, which will be out in march.

in the words of metallica "you know our fans are insane, we are gonna blow this place away".

20 years of half cab!

vans half cab ©click on the image above to enlarge.

hand-picked by steve caballero, this fall, vans continues to mark this milestone in skateboard footwear history with a series of four distinctive half cab 20th anniversary artist collaboration projects, including one style uniquely designed by cab, himself.

-----

if one thing is abundantly clear from vans’ storied 45-year history, it is this: vans is at its very best when listening to the needs of skateboarders. originally released as a mid-top version of the classic vans caballero high-top, the half cab was created in direct response to the demands of a new generation of skateboarders changing the game and taking skateboarding back out into the streets after the vert-riding heyday of the 1980s. “in ’91, i noticed that a lot of street skaters were cutting my shoe halfway down and wearing them that way,” steve caballero remembers. “so in ’92, I gave vans the idea to make a lower cut shoe and call it the half cab.” vans listened and a new silhouette was introduced, an icon was born and countless other shoe companies would eventually go on to release their version of this original vans classic that has remained in vans’ line-up to this day.

circa 1994... i was standing outside my jr high school waiting for my mom to pick me up. i watched in fascination as two fellow 9th graders rolled by on their skateboards. mike manidis looked up at me after attempting some sort of flip trick and said, "i know there is a skater in you." (mike is currently directing the element skate camp, and i think that makes perfect sense.)

he was right, and the following year i began skateboarding. 15 years later, i still ride. a lot happened in the interim of course. i (barely) graduated high school, went to art school in philadelphia, started sculpting professionally, got married, bought a house etc etc. through all the ups and downs, i had two constants. my art and skateboarding.

during the 7 years i spent sculpting for mcfarlane toys, i had a lot of time to reflect on my interests. at some point in 2007, it dawned on me that i could combine the two great passions of my life in to one pursuit. i could sculpt skateboarders. few things in my life have seemed more obvious. i could combine my years of experience in professional sculpting with my years of experience as a skateboarder. i immediately felt as though i had found my 'niche'. and so with no real goal in mind other than enjoying myself, i went home that night and started sculpting a skateboarder at my kitchen table in our tiny studio apartment.
