tom penny "hard times but good times".

you have to watch this flick! fukkin' awesome! best parts i've ever seen of tom penny pushin'.

tom penny. tp. the elusive, nomadic, soft spoken, humble one. if you don't know about tom penny, then like flip skateboards says, sorry, realy sorry! you just had to be there. tony hawk was once quoted saying: "if tom penny ever started skating vert full time, we all might as well retire".

i met tom in may 2011. in a crazy coincidence (or was it?) vincent alvarez was suppose to have come out with me to barcelona to film for the video but got hurt the week before and couldn't come. i had no one to film with until justin & jesse came out a couple weeks later. it was like it was all meant to be. i gave tom the temporary number i had and less than a week later he called me to go skate. the first day we went out to skate & film, tom said he just wanted to do this 360 shuv drop in on this red brick bank. he said if he landed it we were all gonna go have sangria on this dope yacht type boat parked in the bay. before we even got to the spot i showed him this quick wallride type spot. he liked it and we got the 360 flip fakie and the line with the wallie and the nollie flip. we headed to the drop in bank spot. couple of tries and he did the 360 shuv in! we went and had the sangria. tom was super hyped! we got done with sangria on the boat and we walk a couple steps and theres this banked ledge. tom says hold up i got something. does the backside tail and the backside tailslide revert. we walk across the street and theres a similar obstacle but you can do tricks into the bank. tom switch frontside flips into it like nothing! tom was super happy. the day was ending and we headed to macba to rest and chill with friends. after being there for about 20 minutes tom comes to me and says he got a line. i never saw a spot, let alone macba, where everyone sits down to let a skater skate. specially macba! theres usually at least 100 people there on a good day. but once tom started trying his line, everyone sat down. the place was quiet. the line is the switch crooks, switch flip, & switch pop shuv down the set thats in this part. after he landed that it was a wrap! tom couldn't believe the day had turned out the way it did and we called it after that for dinner and some damm lemons!

so salute to a real g who showed us how to flick properly and reminds us of what the goals of a true skateboarder is: to be a unique individual who uses the terrain available in his own creative way for the simple enjoyment a skateboard brings us. fuck the money. fuck the fame. just go have fun on a skateboard!

cheers to you tom! thank you for staying true to your roots, being down for the skate sauce movement, being a good friend, and keeping the spark of inspiration lit in all of us!

peace, love & happiness.

kellen james & larelle gray "hard times but good times".

i met kellen & larelle through sk8mafia owner dan connelly when i started driving down to san diego to film for my first video "like brothers". they instantly became some of my favorite skaters because they had really dope style and so many tricks. on top of that they are both really chill and fun to film with. dan has always been really cool too and let me crash his pad, help with get footy together, and inspired me to start skate sauce by watching him grow sk8mafia. him and marshall heath got some crazy tech skills! cheers homies! sk8mafia4life!

nick panza "hard times but good times".

i remember the first time i saw nick skate. i would cruise thru our local skateshop / skatepark in pittsburgh called shady skates back then. nick panza & his brother, henry panza would roll thru sometimes. i would trip on how good they both were! mad pop, dope tricks both reg and switch and real cool humble people. they're style is so dope too - east coast shit! when I think of pittsburgh skateboarding, i think of the panza brothers.

when i started filming my first video "like brothers", i was living in la and wanted to have some type of pittsburgh representation in it. nick was the go-to and super down. so when it came to skate sauce and making a video i def wanted nick to be part of the fam & have some type of part. nick came out to la with drew windon and the video above is what we got along with some extra clips that nick sent to us.

thanks for holding us down nick!

pittsburgh stand the fuck up!

brett sube's part in "hard times but good times".

here's brett sube part with some friends. fukkin' gnar!

i met brett sube in the middle of filming "hard times but good times". the first thing i noticed was his really relaxed style and amazing sube boost! he brought the fun back into our serious filming missions as well. i think when you grow up skateboarding you start to forget why you did it and get lost in trying to 'make it'. maybe not even for money or sponsors or anything like that, but just so you can live your life riding a skateboard and not some shitty 9-5. sometimes you get so wrapped up into the hustle that you forget why you even started it. but chilling with brett - skating, filming and sunday funday's helped bring me back 360 and connect everything back to just having fun on a skateboard. exploring the city and all the nooks and crannies it has to offer. along with that brett got that steelo! i think christian hosoi is his uncle or related to him so it makes sense. style is everything. that's what makes a trick look good. i rather watch brett 50/50 up some hubba then some kid huck some sloppy trick down 20 stairs. that's just me thou.

cheers to the hard times but good times, brett.

hard times but good times.

this guy skates phat! check this footy out!

i met vince thru my homie justin guillen in 2007. we would all go skate and at first i had no idea how i was gonna film vince 'cause he skated so fast! i kept thinking that i wasn't going to be able to keep up or i was gonna break my fish eye trying to film the vincanity! regardless we made it work! we filmed just to get footy since he was broke, sponsorless, working a 9-5 and ripping hard! then he entered that dc king of la contest and killed it! everything changed for the better after that. we sent some footy to chocolate and the rest is history! that footage is in this part along with whatever we could film over the years. hard times but good times.

cheers vince!

vincent alvarez skates for chocolate skateboards, lakai shoes, spitfire wheels, diamond hardware, skate sauce wax, dickies clothing & footprint insoles.

filmed and edited by amrit jain, using sony vx2000 cameras, mk1 fisheye and final cut pro.

bon appetite!
